A month has passed since the introduction of the Federal Government’s wage subsidy for the early education and care sector, and the positive impact it has had on Big Fat Smile.
The success we are witnessing is a direct result of our continued advocacy efforts. The Multi-Employer Agreement and the subsequent wage subsidy have proven to be exactly what our sector needed, and I am immensely proud of the collective agreement and support from our workforce.
While we are benefiting from a significant pay increase, we are also experiencing a renewed sense of value and recognition in their roles. The wage subsidy has not only provided financial relief but also increased the visibility and recognition of our educators and teachers. The invaluable role you play in our society, supporting families and nurturing and educating our children, is finally being acknowledged on a national level.
A Boost in Employment and Retention
We have seen a staggering 60% increase in job applications since the announcement in May 2024 through to December 2024. This surge in interest is a clear indication that the government’s initiative is effectively curbing the exodus and/or facilitating the return of teachers and educators from our sector.
It seems the anticipation of the wage subsidy has been influential in retaining talent in our sector. Our staff retention rates are at an all-time high, resulting in turnover rates that are significantly lower than the state average. This is a testament to the positive work environment we have been working to create at Big Fat Smile, and the additional financial support has only strengthened our team’s commitment.
Benefits for Families and Children
This positive change is also great news for families. As our services work towards operating at capacity, we can continue to develop our universal early learning education and care, providing high-quality, accessible, inclusive, and affordable services. As you know, we are investing in new roles designed to ensure our services are inclusive for all children, building a competent and capable workforce.
I was recently interviewed by ABC Radio (see video below) about the wage subsidy and how this has brought about a wave of positive changes at Big Fat Smile. It’s a win for us, a win for families, and most importantly, a win for the children we serve.
Here’s to many more months of success and growth!
