Big Fat Smile is incredibly proud to share that Emily, one of our passionate and dedicated School-Based Trainees at Cobblers Hill Community Preschool, has been named a finalist in the 2025 NSW School-Based Trainee of the Year Award.

This prestigious recognition is awarded to students who are undertaking a Certificate II or higher qualification through a part-time School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship, and who demonstrate exceptional commitment to both their studies and their contribution in the workplace. Being selected as a finalist is a significant achievement and a reflection of Emily’s hard work, determination, and growth as an early childhood educator.

A Journey Sparked by Passion

Emily’s journey began in Year 10, with a simple but powerful conversation with her school Careers Advisor. She was looking for a way to stay in school while also pursuing her passion for working in early education. That moment of curiosity and courage led her to a Work Readiness Program – and the beginning of something life-changing.

“The work readiness program meant I had an opportunity to undertake work placement at Dapto Community Preschool, a part of Big Fat Smile. After my first day, I knew this was exactly where I was meant to be,” Emily recalls. “I loved the experience, and I was confident that early education was the right career for me.”

Emily’s placement soon turned into a School-Based Traineeship position at Cobblers Hill Community Preschool, where she’s grown in skill, confidence and care. Every day, she brings fun, laughter and play into her work — and in doing so, she makes a difference in the lives of children in every way.

Making a Meaningful Difference

What makes Emily stand out as a young early childhood professional isn’t just her commitment to learning – it’s the genuine connections she’s formed with the children.

“The most rewarding part of my traineeship has been the relationships I’ve built. I’ll always cherish the moments when a child remembers me, asks for a hug or wants to spend time with me,” she shares. “I hope to make a positive, lasting impact on every child I meet, creating a space where they feel valued, supported and excited and ready to learn,” she continues.

At Cobblers Hill Community Preschool, our team wears the educator role with pride – and Emily exemplifies this with heart. Every day she lives out the Big Fat Smile values, putting the safety, wellbeing, and happiness of children first – which is why in she was honoured with Big Fat Smile Values Award in 2024.

A Moment of Recognition, A Future of Possibility

Being named a finalist in the 2025 NSW School-Based Trainee of the Year Award has been an emotional and empowering moment for Emily.

“This recognition means a lot to me because it shows that the hard work I’ve put in really matters. It’s helped me to realise how far I’ve come and how much I’ve grown, both professionally and personally.”

At Big Fat Smile, professional learning and growth are at the heart of everything we do. Emily’s story is an inspiring example of how far a School-Based Traineeship can take you. Because of the size and reach of our organisation, there are big opportunities for those who want to go further – from Certificate III to Diploma, Teaching and leadership roles across our preschools, long day care centres, Fun Clubs and beyond.

And with the support and mentorship of her team, Emily is already dreaming big.

“I plan to complete my Certificate III by the end of this year, graduate high school, and then begin full-time work while starting my Diploma. This experience has shown me how rewarding this work is — and how much of a difference we can make.”

The Path Ahead

As she looks to the future, Emily is filled with motivation, gratitude, and ambition. Her path so far is just the beginning — and we’re honoured to be a part of her story.
