Through a series of art workshops held at Corrimal Community Centre, an open invitation was sent to the community to participate in coming together to create a bespoke clay mosaic artwork to be displayed in the courtyard of Corrimal Library and Community Centre.

Members of the community of all ages showed their artistic abilities as they reimagined their favourite childhood stories. Today’s children painted representation from books including Piranhas don’t eat bananas, How to Train Your Dragon and Harry Potter.

Big Fat Smile, in conjunction with two talented local artists from the local community, Emma Morris and Rhiannon Gill, ran the workshops, worked together to install the mosaic tiles created by the community. The completed tiles were then arranged in the shape of a tree, signifying the growth of Corrimal with its branches representing diversity, and being part of the surrounding local community.

The art installation titled “Your Words Grow With Me’ encouraged the community to discuss and share ideas, to create a vibrant public art installation within a community precinct, to connect and inspire individuals within the community.

In celebration of everyone’s collaboration, an unveiling was held on the 22nd November 2019 attended by members of the community and local media to view the finished artwork.

This wonderful project coordinated by Big Fat Smile was funded by a Wards-based Community Arts Grant from Wollongong City Council. As a not for profit, community-owned organisation, Big Fat Smile’s vision is to enrich the lives and minds of children and families in their communities and we would like to thank all the wonderful members of our community who came together to make this mural possible.
